Beach House at The National, Richmond

Call what Beach House does “dream pop” all you want, but last night’s nearly sold out gig at The National in Richmond, Virginia was less pop and more experience, as Victoria Legrand, Alex Scally, and Daniel Franz filled the room with subdued guitar and drumming that knew to take a backseat to Legrand’s soaring vocals.

She didn’t talk much, except to say that this gig was the band’s first in Richmond and that they were pleased to be playing (but isn’t that what every band says at some point during their gig?).

Dustin Wong opened for Beach House. Think an Asian Howie Day who doesn’t sing. Lots of samples, primarily made on a guitaresque instrument that never sounded like a guitar. This gig was his first opening for Beach House.
